I have to say that I really loved that this book had such a focus on family dynamics and relationships. Then begins a summer of new friends, romance, alcohol and big decisions. Amber sets off to America with high hopes of reuniting with her mum and experiencing America for herself whilst helping out in the summer camp her mum and step father run. How Hard Can Love Be? follows Amber on her American summer adventure. I am in love with Holly Bourne’s writing style and humour whilst still writing books that inform and evoke emotion. Holly Bourne does it again! I loved Am I Normal Yet? and had unrealistically high expectations for this second book in my series binge but it did not disappoint in the slightest. Can he really be interested in anti-cheerleader Amber? Even with best friends Evie and Lottie’s advice, there’s no escaping the fact: love is hard. But Amber’s hoping that spending the summer with her can change all that.Īnd then there’s prom king Kyle, the guy all the girls want. Her mum has never been the caring type, even before she moved to California, got remarried and had a personality transplant. Both hilarious and heart-rending, this is Amber’s story of how painful – and exhilarating – love can be, following on from Evie’s story in Am I Normal Yet?Īll Amber wants is a little bit of love. Amber, Evie and Lottie: three girls facing down tough issues with the combined powers of friendship, feminism and cheesy snacks.

Cursing her grisly imagination (why, oh, why did she have to pick the ax?), Sophie engages in some real-life gumshoe tactics. If she doesn't solve the mystery, her own bestseller will spell out her doom. When a filmmaker friend is brutally murdered in the manner of a death scene in one of his movies, Sophie becomes convinced that a copycat killer is on the loose -and that she's the next target. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave. So Sophie knows it's not paranoia or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccinos can be. When a mystery writer cries bloody murder, everyone blames her overactive imagination. They’ve got terrible taste in men and both of them are in the midst of an especially terrible streak of bad luck lately. I’m not an asshole to their boyfriends without good reason. “Sleep with one eye open.”Īround them, the audience laughs and I take a moment to enjoy seeing my sisters so happy. “I’ll get you for this, girls,” I call, shaking my fist at them. With an eye to political activism and the media's role in popular struggle, as well as US foreign and domestic policy, Understanding Power is definitive Chomsky. And as he elucidates the connection between America's imperialistic foreign policy and social inequalities at home, Chomsky also discerns the necessary steps to take towards social change. In a series of enlightening and wide-ranging discussions?"published here for the first time?"Chomsky radically reinterprets the events of the past three decades, covering topics from foreign policy during the Vietnam War to the decline of welfare under the Clinton administration. Mitchell and John Schoeffel have assembled the best of Chomsky's talks on the past, present and future of the politics of power. Over the past thirty years, broadly diverse audiences have gathered to attend his sold-out lectures. Noam Chomsky is universally accepted as one of the preeminent public intellectuals of the modern era. Tharp's somewhat old-fashioned take on high-school rivalries and rumbles could play out among Hinton's Outsiders, and Hamp's "Boy howdy" twang might set eyes rolling north of the Mason-Dixon line. And, worst of all, he drags Hamp into his own violent confrontations with opponents he blames for ruining his career. He attributes his own gridiron missteps and inabilities to Hamp's lack of aggression. He impedes Hamp's every attempt to get closer to Sara, the one girl with whom he's comfortable. He insists that Hamp get a girlfriend worthy of a football player and sets him up on a disastrous date with a luscious man-eater. In fact, nearly all Blaine's scarcely contained rage gets directed at Hamp. Just as Hamp's star is on the rise, though, Blaine is struggling with a knee injury that threatens his college prospects, and he's not taking the matter graciously. Not that life is perfect-there's no dad at home, Mom runs with a new man every month or so, and the pressure is on for the Kennisaw Knights to win their fifth straight undefeated season and match the record set decades ago in their football-crazed Oklahoma town. Narrator Hampton is one of the good guys-gifted and determined on defense, shy and gentlemanly around girls, loyal in his friendship with fellow Kennisaw Knight, Blaine, who got him started in football back in grade school. Miko views the world behind the pages of her books and her designs. Many thanks to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review. My Party Girl review My Sweet Girl review Rachel Hollis outdid herself with Smart Girl, I'm more than in love with this book, and I absolutely suggest it to all my reader friends. I've found myself thinking of all three of them, Landon, Max, and Miko, as friends, so I am both happy and sad to see the end of this great series. The girls in her series are relatable, their story lines are real, and the lessons in all three books are pretty poignant in today's world. Rachel has a unique style of writing, I think it's due to her 15 years of living in LA and real life experience as an event planner. It doesn't mean I'm not honest with my book reviews, I just kind of know I am going to love them no matter what. Plus, have you seen her website or her Facebook? She's real, she's honest, and I'm a big fan of lifestyle websites that have food recipes, party ideas, and more. You see, I read and loved Party Girl, then I had the opportunity to meet Rachel and she is so very cool and as funny in real life as she is in the writing in the pages of her books. I have to admit, I may be a biased reader when it comes to Rachel Hollis' books. I think the sum of those gives a fair representation of what she achieved during her long career. After that we have a short story, which gives me an opportunity to talk about her plays. I’ve also picked my favourite book that doesn’t feature those characters. I’ve always been a huge fan of the early Miss Marples, so I’ve chosen one of those. The only thing I give you credit for is that it’s easier than choosing one. Tell me how you chose the Agatha Christie books for this list.Ĭhoosing five was virtually impossible. I think she would have accepted the challenges of computers, modern communications and all the different visual representations of her work. I frequently ask myself how she might respond to a particular issue today. I’ve been involved in her business-books, television and film-for quite some time now. I often think we could do with more of the former and less of the latter today. She was a wonderful listener and always more interested in hearing what other people were doing than telling them about her success. When she was with the family, she was just normal and loving. She never tried to be famous or act a part. She was a lovely grandmother because she didn’t stand out at all. As her grandson, could you tell us what she was like? Foreign Policy & International Relationsīefore we get to your recommendations, Agatha Christie’s books are probably still the bestselling novels of all time but, by all accounts, she was a very humble person. In 1964, Gage earned a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. “A Place for Us” relates the Gage family’s experiences as immigrants in 1950’s America in the city of Worcester, Massachusetts. Decades later, as an adult, Gage sought out those responsible for her death. Gage’s mother, Eleni, was executed for arranging the escape of her children from their Communist-occupied village. “Eleni” describes the life of his family in Greece during the Second World War and Greek Civil War.
